An ETG test, also known as an Ethylglucuronide test, is a toxicology test used to detect alcohol in an individual’s urine. Unlike most alcohol tests, the ETG test can detect the use of alcohol for up to 80 hours after ingestion. Other benefits of the ETG test include:
• Ideal for zero tolerance programs for employers or rehabilitation clinics
• Used as a early warning system to detect trends towards relapse
• Results are typically ready within 48 hours
• ETG test may be used in conjunction with drug testing
• Allows accurate monitoring in alcohol treatment programs
• ETG tests can also be done using hair, which allows for even longer detection time
An ETG test is collected in the same way a standard urine drug test is collected (with the exception of hair) and then sent to a toxicology lab.
There has been some speculation as to the accuracy of the ETG test, but most of these concerns are scientifically unfounded. Some people have claimed to have false positives on ETG tests, claiming that they abstained from drinking but still tested positive. However, when supportively questioned, 55% of those individuals admitted to consuming alcohol. There is always potential for the ETG test to detect other sources of alcohol besides ‘direct consumption’, however, these levels are usually miniscule and the sensitive lab equipment used for the ETG test can determine actually consumption. That is not to say that it is not a good idea to avoid products that contain alcohol before submitting to an ETG test, but the likelihood of testing positive without directly consuming alcohol is very slim.
