Vitamin D is important for numerous physiological processes in addition to building bone; For example, Vitamin D regulates calcium levels in the blood stream and determines how much should be stored within the skeleton.
Dr. Geert Carmeliet and colleagues at the University of Leuven in Belgium investigated how Vitamin D laffects the skeleton when serum calcium levels are depleted. Using lab mice that lack the intestinal Vitamin D receptor, the researchers found that the mice still maintained normal calcium levels even when given a low-calcium diet. Further study suggested that Vitamin D stimulated bone cells to produce factors that removed calcium from bone in a process known as bone resorption in order to satisfy normal serum calcium levels. Therefore, although Vitamin D is important for maintaining serum calcium levels, it can also promote bone density loss.
Subsequent studies showed how these findings may explain clinical results where vitamin D supplements failed to prevent fractures in elderly patients, and in some cases, were correlated with increased fracture rates.

• To find the cause of symptoms of heart disease like- chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting or irregular heartbeats.
• To see if the heart’s chambers are to thick (hypertrophied)
• To see how well medicines are working and whether or not they have side effects that affect the heart
• To see how well mechanical devices in the heart are working like a pacemaker
• To check the condition of the heart when other diseases or conditions are present
The procedure for an EKG is as follows:
The patient will be asked to remove all metal form the waist up and have the option of donning a paper vest with the opening to the front. When ready, the patient will lay facing up on a table or bed. The medical assistant will then attach sticky electrodes to the chest and extremities. Next, the healthcare professional will attach clips that are connected to wires, which are connected to the EKG machine. Once everything has been placed the healthcare professional will instruct the patient to be very still and not speak during the EKG. The EKG is painless and only takes a moment to complete. The line tracings will be interpreted by the Doctor and a diagnosis will be made based on the findings.

In the study, researchers found that in initial blood samples when all women were HIV free, approximately 15% of the women who later developed HIV were infected with Mycoplasma genitalium, compared to the 6.5% who never developed the disease. Another interesting find is that M. Genitalium was shown to be more prevalent than even Gonorrhea and Chlamydia. According to researchers, M. Genitalium was responsible for approximately 9% of all HIV infections throughout the study but other factors showed even more risk. In a study conducted by Duke University over a two year period involving 600 HIV positive patients, it was found that one in four patients were sexually abused as children. Traumatic childhood experiences were also linked to poorer overall health. More than half of the patients involved in the study had experienced sexual or physical abuse in their lifetimes. Half of the patients had experienced three or more traumatic experiences, including sexual and physical abuse or witnessing domestic violence as a child, a parent’s suicide attempt or suicidal thoughts, or losing a child. Duke University professor Brian Pence said “For whatever outcome we looked at, psychological trauma ended up being a predictor of worse medical outcomes and poorer health-related behaviors.”
More traumatic life experiences were linked with unprotected sex, skipping antiretroviral treatments, recent emergency room visits and hospitalizations. HIV positive patients with more traumatic experiences were more likely to see their health decline or die during the study period.
Most surprising to researchers was that the effects of past trauma on current behaviors and health was not explained by the usually factors.
"We would expect people with a history of exposure to trauma to have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression or other mental health concerns, like drug abuse or poor coping skills, and that these things in turn would more fully explain why they had lower adherence to their medications and worse health," Pence said. "But, we found that trauma history was still associated with bad health outcomes independent of mental health status, drug use or coping styles. So we have more to learn about exactly how past traumatic experiences exert influence on behaviors and health outcomes years down the road."
Healthcare professionals need more training in identifying HIV patients who have undergone trauma so as to better understand and implement tools to help these patients be more diligent about using protection, taking medications, and taking more control of their health.

Rock played the lead in nearly 70 movies during his career that spanned over four decades. He also appeared on popular TV shows like Dynasty and McMillan and wife. Rock was the quintessential movie star: Handsome and tall, charismatic, and charming.
Up until the point that Rock made his shocking announcement, the general thought about HIV was that it affected Haitians, Junkies, Sodomites, and other marginalized people- not Hollywood movie stars. Rock had kept his homosexuality a secret solely for the sake of his career.Towards the end of his short life (He died at 59 years old) he not only came out as a gay man, but he also confessed to being infected with HIV. After this announcement, Rock donated his time and money to raising awareness for HIV/AIDS research before he died 2 months and ten days after making his announcement.
Rock Hudson is a perfect example of how HIV operates. No amount of money, recognition, or charisma can protect an individual from HIV. Hepatitis B is a viral infection that targets the liver which causes acute and chronic disease. Hepatitis B is spread by coming into contact with the blood of someone who is infected; it is not spread via casual conduct like kissing, hugging, shaking or holding hands.
Approximately 2 billion people in the world have been infected by Hepatitis B and nearly 350 million live with chronic infection. It has been estimated that about 600,000 people die each year due to acute or chronic complications from Hepatitis B. The Hepatitis B virus is 50 to 100 times more infectious than the HIV.
Hepatitis B is preventable. A Hepatitis B vaccine was created in 1982 which is 95% effective and is the first known vaccine against a major human cancer. When K2 or ‘spice’ began popping up around the United States, emergency rooms and the DEA noticed a sharp spike in injuries, illnesses, and deaths related to ingesting synthetic drugs like K2. It was clear in no time that these unregulated and dangerous substances were going to become a very big problem. K2 is typically plant material that has been coated with five chemicals which claim to recreate the effects of THC in Marijuana. The DEA placed a year-long ban on the five chemicals used while they lobbied the government to criminalize the substances. Results suggest that men should be tested early and annually. Gonorrhea developed resistance to sulfanilamide in the 1940’s, penicillin and tetracyclines in the 1980’s, and then fluoroquinolones by 2007. Now treatments options are limited by the CDC to third-generation cephalosporins. Currently there are no other drug options available.
The most prominent increases in drug susceptibility to Gonorrhea are in the west and among men who have sex with men (MSM). These higher-risk populations are showing demographic patterns that mirror those observed when Gonorrhea became resistant to fluoropuinolone, putting them at risk.
A simple urine test is often all that is needed to detect Gonorrhea in a person’s system. Gonorrhea often has no symptoms, but typical symptoms include burning urination, genital discharge, and pain during intercourse.
If left untreated, Gonorrhea can cause irreversible damage to internal organs and cause infertility.

Hepatitis B is a viral infection that targets the liver which causes acute and chronic disease. Hepatitis B is spread by coming into contact with the blood of someone who is infected; it is not spread via casual conduct like kissing, hugging, shaking or holding hands.
Approximately 2 billion people in the world have been infected by Hepatitis B and nearly 350 million live with chronic infection. It has been estimated that about 600,000 people die each year due to acute or chronic complications from Hepatitis B. The Hepatitis B virus is 50 to 100 times more infectious than the HIV.
Hepatitis B is preventable. A Hepatitis B vaccine was created in 1982 which is 95% effective and is the first known vaccine against a major human cancer. Most school-aged children in the United States undergo a three shot series of vaccination. Healthcare workers are also more susceptible to contracting Hepatitis B due to their high level of exposure to blood and blood-borne pathogens. Adults can also get vaccinated against Hepatitis B and a simple blood test will determine if someone has had the vaccination before in their lifetime. The likelihood of the disease becoming chronic depends upon the age of the individual when they were infected. For example, 90% of infants infected during the first year of life will have Hepatitis B that becomes chronic. The older the individual is, the less likely. The good news is that about 90% of healthy adults will recover and get rid of the virus in about 6 months.

* 16% of Caucasian sexually active gay/bi men were infected
There was, and always has been a socioeconomic differentiation in those who test positive for HIV. Infection rates are typically higher among people with low-income and poor education. Previous studies have shown that this distinction is similar in heterosexual populations as well.
Official figures for HIV infection rates in 2006 showed 40,000 new infection cases annually; But the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) says that figure should have been about 40% higher-closer to 56,000. The initial under-calculation may amount to a short fall of approximately 15,000 new cases per year for 15 years, totaling an additional 225,000 new cases.
There is no doubt that more must be done to educate and empower high risk communities like MSM (Men who have sex with men) but just how to bring about a real change is a question plaguing lawmakers and civilians alike.
Undoubtedly, the very first step is prevention and using responsible sexual practices –i.e.: Wearing Condoms. An HIV test is simple to perform and is offered at a nominal fee. All sexually active individuals homosexual or otherwise should have a routine HIV screening at least once a year.

When transmitted ‘sexually’ it can enter the body from kissing, oral, vaginal, and anal sex.
In its early stages, Syphilis usually manifests as nothing more than a single, small, and painless sore. It can sometimes also cause swelling in the near-by lymph nodes. If left untreated, Syphilis will sometimes cause a non-itchy rash, usually occurring on the hands and feet. It’s important to know however, that many people do not notice any symptoms for years. Symptoms can go away and then come back again. The sores caused by Syphilis infection make an individual more susceptible to contracting HIV if they come in contact with the virus.
The good news is that a simple blood test can diagnose a Syphilis infection and routine antibiotics make it easily curable when caught early.
As of 2010 there is no effective vaccine aimed at prevention. The best way to avoid contracting Syphilis is to abstain from intimate contact with someone who is infected. Is sexual or intimate contact does occur then a latex condom should be used during any and all encounters.

HIV Vaccination Research progress

In the medical journal Chemistry & Biology s February 24th issue, there was a featured article regarding new discoveries in the ongoing challenge of HIV vaccination and prevention. According to the study, scientists have made a break-through discovery regarding the bacterium Rhizobium radiobacter, which is similiar to the HIV virus in that it is coated by sugar molecules on its surface. This resemblance is giving scientists a basis for developing a preventative vaccine. In HIV, the sugar molecules act as a cloaking device, allowing the virus to enter our system without being noticed until weeks later when it has already set up house and begun to multiply rapidly. Once our body recognizes the intruder, the virus is already several steps ahead of our body’s efforts to eliminate it. Scientists hypothesis that the sugar molecules found on the Rhizobium could be used to trigger our immune response into recognizing the sugar molecules in HIV, which would prompt a faster awareness to the virus’ invasion.
Before it’s possible to put this hypothesis into practice, scientists need to find a suitable protein to bind the sugar molecules. The protein is necessary to adequately trigger the development of antibodies to the sugar. These same antibodies would then recognize and work to eliminate the sugar molecules attached to the HIV virus. This is not totally new scientific territory, as a similar method of developing vaccines for meningitis and childhood pneumonia.

Designer drugs

Designer drugs have been in the news a lot lately, whether you recognize them by that term or not. Substances like “K-2 or Spice” and “Bath Salts”, which are synthetic reproductions of chemical compounds similar to those found in THC and Cocaine, are being distributed and sold under the guise of ‘incense’ and ‘bath salts’, and consumed. Although these products come with labels that read : “Not for human consumption” they are being smoked, snorted, taken orally, and ingested in many other ways.
There are two dangerous problems. The first of which is that they are readily available (even to children) at gas stations, head shops, and general stores and are inexpensive to buy.
The second disturbing fact is that both K2 and bath salts have shown serious negative side effects, and in some cases, death.
K2 contains over 400 chemical compounds and is sometimes laced with actual THC (marijuana).
The substance is meant to mimic the effects of THC but the side effects are proving very dangerous. For example, just some unpleasant effects of ingesting K2 are:
Rapid heartbeat (tachycardia)
Panic and Anxiety
Seizures
Coma
Death

Bath Salts (MDPV) are supposed to mimic the effects of cocaine and amphetamines and are classified temporarily (until further legislation is passed) as schedule I drugs, which are the most restricted and controlled substances according to the federal government. They are just as, if not more, dangerous than K2. The side effects can include:

Tachycardia
Panic/ Paranoia
Violent outbursts
Hallucinations
Kidney failure

Emergency rooms all across America have reported a very large increase in ER visits due to ingesting both of these dangerous chemical compounds. Deaths have occurred in children as young as 13 years old. If someone you love may be abusing designer drugs, have them tested before it’s too late.

Chlamydia caused by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis and is transmitted sexually the majority of the time. Chlamydia is often referred to as a ‘silent’ disease because for many people, it shows no signs or symptoms in the early stages. In people who do experience symptoms, the most common include:
*Burning or painful urination
*Genital discharge
*Itching, burning, and swelling
*PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease)
* More susceptible to HIV
*Potential for ectopic pregnancy
Chlamydia can also cause infertility and can be passed from the cervix to the rectum in some cases.
The good news is that Chlamydia can be treated and cured with antibiotics; A single dose of azithromycin or a week of doxycycline (twice daily) are the most commonly used treatments at this time.
All sex partners should be evaluated, tested, and treated. Persons with Chlamydia should abstain from sexual intercourse for 7 days after single dose antibiotics or until completion of a 7-day course of antibiotics, to prevent spreading the infection to partners.

Women compose nearly a quarter of new HIV infections, and 66% of these women are African American. This trend is interesting given the fact that African American women comprise only 14% of the female US population.

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSVI)- Herpes type one refers to oral herpes. If you’ve ever had a cold sore, you have Herpes type I. This type of Herpes is VERY common, with about 80% of the adult population in the US testing positive. Treatment is usually topical for mild cases, with antiviral therapy for more severe cases.
Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSVII) - Herpes type 2 is genital herpes. This type of herpes can affect the genitals, mouth, rectal area, pubic area and upper thighs. Type 2 is sexually transmitted and according to researchers, 1 in 4 adults is positive for HSVII. This type of herpes is treated with antiviral medications like Valtrex.
Human Herpes Virus 3 (HHV3) - this type of herpes is also called Varicella Zoster and is the cause of Chicken Pox. When this virus causes recurrent skin infections it is called Herpes Zoster or “shingles”. This type of herpes is closely related to HSVI, in the way it manifests itself physically. However, typically a HHV3 infection is more severe than a reoccurrence of HSV1.
Human Herpes Virus 4 (HHV4) - Is also known as the Epstein Barr virus, it is the major cause of Mononucleosis or “mono”. This is a contagious infection transferred by the sharing of saliva during kissing, sharing utensils, coughing or sneezing.
Human Herpes Virus 5 (HHV5) – This is the official name of CMV (Cytomegalovirus)- which is also a cause of mononucleosis- CMV can be transmitted sexually, can cause problems in newborns and can cause Hepatitis. This virus usually causes little to no problems in people with normal, healthy immune systems but in those who have lowered immune function like people with HIV, it can wreak havoc on bodily systems and cause serious complications.
Human Herpes Virus 6 (HHV6) – This type of Herpes causes Roseola, (a viral disease which causes a high fever and skin rash in small children.)This condition causes other fever related problems in this age group as well. This accounts for many cases of convulsions from fevers in small children.
Human Herpes Virus 7 (HHV7) – This type of Herpes and HHV6 are very closely related. It has been shown that these two herpes varieties are so common that most of mankind has been infected at some point, usually early in life.
Human Herpes Virus 8 (HHV8) – This form of herpes was recently discovered in the tumors of KS or Karposi’s Sarcoma. These are commonly found in people with AIDS and are rare otherwise. It is very difficult to treat with medication and may also cause other cancers like lymphomas.

These days’ young people are looking for new and legal ways to get high. This can be accomplished by doing everything from ‘whippets’ –inhaling aerosol, to sniffing white out, to smoking K2 or ‘spice’ as it is sometimes called. But the danger doesn’t end there, not by a long shot. Kids are inventive, and with the plethora of information available to them on the internet and through social networking- they are finding new and even more dangerous ways to get high. K2 for example-which is said to mimic the effects of marijuana, has caused a dramatic increase in Emergency room visits in just the last two years. The same is true for ‘bath salts’ which are supposed to recreate the effects cocaine. These substances contain well over 400 chemicals and create lasting health problems, such as a rapid heartbeat, paranoia, coma, seizures, and even death.
In addition to the aforementioned designer drugs, older forms of intoxication from naturally occurring substances are being used by the young people of today. An example of this would be ingesting wormwood- a substance used in making the very powerful drink: Absinthe. Even things that seem fairly harmless to many of us can have adverse health effects. Red Bull, a popular energy drink in America has been banned in both Germany and France. Red bull contains 0.13mcg of cocaine per serving and greatly increases the likelihood of heart attack and stroke for both the young and the old. Red Bull also contains Glucuronolactone- a very dangerous chemical stimulant.
Potential highs are everywhere. Don’t let a loved one’s drug abuse slip under the radar, consider drug testing individuals who seem out of sorts; you could save their life.

HIV Vaccination Research progress

In the medical journal Chemistry & Biology s February 24th issue, there was a featured article regarding new discoveries in the ongoing challenge of HIV vaccination and prevention. According to the study, scientists have made a break-through discovery regarding the bacterium Rhizobium radiobacter, which is similiar to the HIV virus in that it is coated by sugar molecules on its surface. This resemblance is giving scientists a basis for developing a preventative vaccine. In HIV, the sugar molecules act as a cloaking device, allowing the virus to enter our system without being noticed until weeks later when it has already set up house and begun to multiply rapidly. Once our body recognizes the intruder, the virus is already several steps ahead of our body’s efforts to eliminate it. Scientists hypothesis that the sugar molecules found on the Rhizobium could be used to trigger our immune response into recognizing the sugar molecules in HIV, which would prompt a faster awareness to the virus’ invasion.
Before it’s possible to put this hypothesis into practice, scientists need to find a suitable protein to bind the sugar molecules. The protein is necessary to adequately trigger the development of antibodies to the sugar. These same antibodies would then recognize and work to eliminate the sugar molecules attached to the HIV virus. This is not totally new scientific territory, as a similar method of developing vaccines for meningitis and childhood pneumonia.

Thyroid Testing

The Thyroid is a gland which regulates how your body uses energy. When the Thyroid is sluggish and underactive, it is called ‘hypothyroidism’. Hypothyroidism is the most common Thyroid disorder. Hypothyroidism causes a variety of symptoms that range in severity:
-Fatigue; Many people report feeling tired even when they have gotten a good night’s sleep.
-Hair loss
-Weight gain; Even with improved diet and exercise
-Low body temperature; Cold extremities like hands and feet
-Dry skin
-High Cholesterol
-“Brain fogginess”
-Muscle pain and longer recovery time
-Constipation
-Irritable bowel
-Swelling in the ankles or facial puffiness
-Increased risk of coronary diseases


Frequently, an underactive Thyroid is caused by nutritional deficiencies, and once these deficiencies have been addressed the problem often resolves itself.

Because hormones in our body all work together during homeostasis, a Thyroid hormone imbalance can cause other hormones to run off track. Some hormones affected by Thyroid hormone levels include:
Estrogen- The Thyroid may not be able to produce hormones properly if your estrogen levels are high.
Progesterone- Because it has a stimulating effect on the Thyroid, a drop in levels of progesterone throughout menopause or perimenopause can lower Thyroid hormone levels.
Testosterone- Testosterone also stimulates the Thyroid, so reduced thyroid function can occur during andropause (male menopause)

In order to determine Thyroid function, routine blood testing is necessary. Comprehensive Thyroid testing typically includes: TSH, Free T3, Free T4, Anti-thyroglobulin antibodies, thyroperoxidase antibodies (TPO), T3 uptake, and T4 total.
