Blood Pregnancy Test

Although urine pregnancy tests are easy to use and convenient to buy, many women will not feel safe accepting the results of these tests without first having a blood pregnancy test. Blood pregnancy tests can measure the exact amount of hCG(Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) in a woman’s blood. This number will indicate not only if the woman is in fact pregnant, but how far a long she is in her pregnancy as well. This type of blood pregnancy test is called a “Quantitative pregnancy test.”
There is another blood pregnancy test called a “Qualitative pregnancy test.” This type of test only tells the woman she is or is not pregnant, similar to the results of a urine test but with a much higher accuracy.
Blood pregnancy tests have certain advantages to the urine test:
1. Blood pregnancy tests can determine pregnancy sooner than a standard urine test. As early as 7-12 days from possible conception.
2. Because a quantitative blood pregnancy test gives the exact level of hCG, the Doctor can use this information to track the progression of the pregnancy as well as monitor for any signs of a problem.
3. There is very little room for error since a blood pregnancy test is done by a trained healthcare professional. At home urine tests can sometimes be confusing and if not performed correctly can give false results.
4. For about the same cost of a urine test, you can have a more accurate and more in depth blood pregnancy test. This information is valuable to your healthcare providers.
5. Some types of urine tests will give different answers when taken multiple times. A blood test is the only way to know for sure.

A blood pregnancy test is often the first step for women who think they are pregnant. The results of this test can change a woman’s life forever, so shouldn’t she be a well informed and confident patient? Scheduling a blood pregnancy test is as easy as calling your local Any Lab Test Now location and making an appointment. You’ll be glad you did.

Alcohol Test

People need alcohol tests for a variety of reasons; Sometimes a probation officer requires a urine alcohol test to make sure the defendant is abstaining from alcohol while under suspicion; Sometimes a parent wants to have their teenagers tested because they suspect alcohol abuse, etc, etc.
Whatever the reason for performing an alcohol test may be, alcohol testing is easy and affordable. Many laboratories (like Any Lab Test Now) can perform these tests in a matter of minutes and the tests can be tailored to the desired period of detection. For example, an ETG alcohol test can detect alcohol use as far back as 80hrs, whereas an Alco-strip will detect alcohol use over the last few hours. There are even hair alcohol tests available that can detect alcohol use over the course of 3 months! These tests are accurate, affordable, and in some cases, necessary and anyone can get one with no need for a doctor’s script or health insurance.
When alcohol testing is performed by Any Lab test Now, you can rest assured that the specimen will be collected to Department of Transportation (DOT)standards by highly trained professionals with extensive medical and toxicology knowledge. If you suspect someone you know is abusing alcohol call Any Lab Test Now and make an appointment; you’ll never regret the decision to learn the truth.

Immigration DNA Test

In order to legally immigrate to the United States, an individual must submit to an Immigration DNA test to prove a biological link between a person in the US (the petitioner) and a person in a foreign country (the beneficiary). In order to establish this connection, a DNA test must be performed, usually using what is called a ‘buccal swab’. A buccal swab is a long plastic stick with a cotton swab on one end. The swab is rubbed inside the cheek to collect DNA skin cells. Genetic markers are matched up in the laboratory to establish a biological link between two people. Immigration DNA testing is not limited to Paternity (ie: Father and Child), but is used to prove a link for a number of other relationships like Maternity, Grandparantage, Sibilingship, and more.
With a biological link established, the American Embassy in the foreign country and the US Department of Homeland Security can verify and validate a relationship between the petitioner and the beneficiary; thereby authorizing the beneficiary as eligible for immigration to the United States.
Immigration DNA tests are easy, painless, and well worth the fees involved. The process of immigration DNA testing is an investment that can produce benefits that last a lifetime.

HIV/AIDS SPARES NO ONE

HIV- Human Immunodeficiency Virus can affect people from all nationalities, all creeds, all ages, and all sexual orientations. Since HIV came to the fore-front of our consciousness in 1981, many well-known celebrities have not only contracted the virus, but have spoken out to promote awareness and fight discrimination. Among the celebrities who helped to promote HIV/AIDS awareness, one stands out in the minds of many: Rock Hudson. Rock Hudson was the first major US celebrity to die of AIDS.
Rock Hudson was born in 1925 and died of AIDS on October 2nd, 1985. He had hidden his homosexuality and hid his infection from the public until two months before he passed away. In his prime, Rock was one of the most well-known movie stars in the world. Mr. Hudson was highly praised for his is career in film and television. Rock played the lead in nearly 70 movies during his career that spanned over four decades. He also appeared on popular TV shows like Dynasty and McMillan and wife. Rock was the quintessential movie star: Handsome and tall, charismatic, and charming.
Up until the point that Rock made his shocking announcement, the general thought about HIV was that it affected Haitians, Junkies, Sodomites, and other marginalized people- not Hollywood movie stars. Rock had kept his homosexuality a secret solely for the sake of his career.Towards the end of his short life (He died at 59 years old) he not only came out as a gay man, but he also confessed to being infected with HIV. After this announcement, Rock donated his time and money to raising awareness for HIV/AIDS research before he died 2 months and ten days after making his announcement.
Rock Hudson is a perfect example of how HIV operates. No amount of money, recognition, or charisma can protect an individual from HIV. Exposure to HIV positive blood or bodily fluids is dangerous and all precautions must be taken to limit exposure. This means using condoms, not sharing needles, and using common sense. In order to eradicate HIV we must educate ourselves and protect ourselves and one another with that knowledge.

Hepatitis B is preventable

Hepatitis B is a viral infection that targets the liver which causes acute and chronic disease. Hepatitis B is spread by coming into contact with the blood of someone who is infected; it is not spread via casual conduct like kissing, hugging, shaking or holding hands.
Approximately 2 billion people in the world have been infected by Hepatitis B and nearly 350 million live with chronic infection. It has been estimated that about 600,000 people die each year due to acute or chronic complications from Hepatitis B. The Hepatitis B virus is 50 to 100 times more infectious than the HIV.
Hepatitis B is preventable. A Hepatitis B vaccine was created in 1982 which is 95% effective and is the first known vaccine against a major human cancer. Most school-aged children in the United States undergo a three shot series of vaccination. Healthcare workers are also more susceptible to contracting Hepatitis B due to their high level of exposure to blood and blood-borne pathogens. Adults can also get vaccinated against Hepatitis B and a simple blood test will determine if someone has had the vaccination before in their lifetime. The likelihood of the disease becoming chronic depends upon the age of the individual when they were infected. For example, 90% of infants infected during the first year of life will have Hepatitis B that becomes chronic. The older the individual is, the less likely. The good news is that about 90% of healthy adults will recover and get rid of the virus in about 6 months.
If you don’t know if you’ve been vaccinated, call your local Any Lab Test Now location and ask for a Hepatitis B titer test.

K2 / Spice

When K2 or ‘spice’ began popping up around the United States, emergency rooms and the DEA noticed a sharp spike in injuries, illnesses, and deaths related to ingesting synthetic drugs like K2. It was clear in no time that these unregulated and dangerous substances were going to become a very big problem. K2 is typically plant material that has been coated with five chemicals which claim to recreate the effects of THC in Marijuana. The DEA placed a year-long ban on the five chemicals used while they lobbied the government to criminalize the substances. The year-long ban is almost up, but it has been granted an extension for at least another 6 months. Federal law states that the ban on such substances (which have been temporarily categorized as Schedule I drugs-the highest and most dangerous drug class) can only have a duration of 18 months unless further action is taken by the government. The house presented a bill to outlaw synthetic drugs like K2 and Bath Salts (the equivalent of fake cocaine) but the Senate did not follow suit.
In 2011, Poison control centers received 13,000 calls related to reactions from K2; of those calls, a solid 60% were under the age of 25. K2 is dangerous because the chemical cocktail used to coat the plant materials has been shown to cause convulsions, hallucinations, vomiting, rapid heart rate, seizures, and even death in a few cases. The real danger here is that with the substance being so readily available to the youth of the nation, children are typically the victims of this very dangerous trend of designer drugs.

PSA

In a study recently published by the New England Journal of Medicine, it was found that men who experience a rapid increase in their PSA levels during the year prior to a prostate cancer diagnosis are at a significantly higher risk of death, even after undergoing a radical prostatectomy.
Results suggest that men should be tested early and annually. A sharp rise in PSA velocity during the year prior to a prostate cancer diagnosis can actually give Doctors insight to the potential deadliness and aggressiveness of the cancer. Since most prostate cancer deaths begin to occur in men in their 40’s, Physicians suggest tracking PSA levels by age 40. Prostate cancer is the second leading cancer related death for men. Prostate cancers kill nearly 30,000 men per year.
Some doctors recommend having a biopsy performed once a PSA level of 2.5 has been established. One reason for this is that a previous study showed that of men with PSA levels between 2.5 and 4.0, more than 20% had cancer.
Deaths from prostate cancer have lowered by about 20% among Caucasians and about 16% among African Americans since the mid-1990s when the use of the PSA tests became wide-spread. While improved treatment methods have helped these numbers to decline, it is very clear that early detection and treatment are vital to long-term health.

More than 600,000 Americans contract Gonorrhea each year

More than 600,000 Americans contract Gonorrhea each year. As if that statistic wasn’t alarming enough, scientists at the CDC are now showing evidence that some strains of Gonorrhea are becoming resistant to the usual antibiotics used to treat it. At this time, the infection is treated with third generation Cephalosporin , but the effectiveness of using cephalosporins for treating Gonorrhea is diminishing rapidly.
According to Judith N. Wasserheit, professor and vice chair of the department of global health at the University of Washington and co-author of a new perspective published in the New England Journal of Medicine. ,
““Though there is no evidence yet of treatment failures in the United States, trends in decreased susceptibility coupled with a history of emerging resistance and reported treatment failures in other countries point to a likelihood of failures on the horizon and a need for urgent action.”
Gonorrhea is the second most common communicable disease in the United States. Scientists have noted that Neisseria gonorrhoeae has always readily developed resistance to antimicrobial agents.
Gonorrhea developed resistance to sulfanilamide in the 1940’s, penicillin and tetracyclines in the 1980’s, and then fluoroquinolones by 2007. Now treatments options are limited by the CDC to third-generation cephalosporins. Currently there are no other drug options available.
The most prominent increases in drug susceptibility to Gonorrhea are in the west and among men who have sex with men (MSM). These higher-risk populations are showing demographic patterns that mirror those observed when Gonorrhea became resistant to fluoropuinolone, putting them at risk.
A simple urine test is often all that is needed to detect Gonorrhea in a person’s system. Gonorrhea often has no symptoms, but typical symptoms include burning urination, genital discharge, and pain during intercourse.
If left untreated, Gonorrhea can cause irreversible damage to internal organs and cause infertility.

HIV - Almost 1 in 5 sexually active gay

Almost 1 in 5 sexually active gay or bisexual men in the US has HIV; but 44% of them do not know they are infected. During the 2008 National Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) systems study of 8,153 sexually active gay/bisexual males in 21 cities, some disturbing trends presented themselves. The report revealed that:
*28 % of African American sexually active gay/bi men were infected
*18% of Hispanic sexually active gay/bi men were infected (Hispanic meaning South American decent, not including people from Spain)
* 16% of Caucasian sexually active gay/bi men were infected
There was, and always has been a socioeconomic differentiation in those who test positive for HIV. Infection rates are typically higher among people with low-income and poor education. Previous studies have shown that this distinction is similar in heterosexual populations as well.
Official figures for HIV infection rates in 2006 showed 40,000 new infection cases annually; But the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) says that figure should have been about 40% higher-closer to 56,000. The initial under-calculation may amount to a short fall of approximately 15,000 new cases per year for 15 years, totaling an additional 225,000 new cases.
There is no doubt that more must be done to educate and empower high risk communities like MSM (Men who have sex with men) but just how to bring about a real change is a question plaguing lawmakers and civilians alike.
Undoubtedly, the very first step is prevention and using responsible sexual practices –i.e.: Wearing Condoms. An HIV test is simple to perform and is offered at a nominal fee. All sexually active individuals homosexual or otherwise should have a routine HIV screening at least once a year.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a spirochete bacterium called Treponema Pallidum. Syphilis is most often transmitted sexually as it can pass through mucous membranes or compromised skin. It can also be spread from Mother to child during pregnancy or childbirth. When transmitted ‘sexually’ it can enter the body from kissing, oral, vaginal, and anal sex.
In its early stages, Syphilis usually manifests as nothing more than a single, small, and painless sore. It can sometimes also cause swelling in the near-by lymph nodes. If left untreated, Syphilis will sometimes cause a non-itchy rash, usually occurring on the hands and feet. It’s important to know however, that many people do not notice any symptoms for years. Symptoms can go away and then come back again. The sores caused by Syphilis infection make an individual more susceptible to contracting HIV if they come in contact with the virus.
The good news is that a simple blood test can diagnose a Syphilis infection and routine antibiotics make it easily curable when caught early.
As of 2010 there is no effective vaccine aimed at prevention. The best way to avoid contracting Syphilis is to abstain from intimate contact with someone who is infected. Is sexual or intimate contact does occur then a latex condom should be used during any and all encounters.
Unfortunately there is no guarantee that once a person rids themselves of Syphilis they will not become re-infected. That is largely the responsibility of the individual to practice safe sex, follow medication routines and follow up with Doctors periodically for blood work.

HIV Vaccination Research progress

In the medical journal Chemistry & Biology s February 24th issue, there was a featured article regarding new discoveries in the ongoing challenge of HIV vaccination and prevention. According to the study, scientists have made a break-through discovery regarding the bacterium Rhizobium radiobacter, which is similiar to the HIV virus in that it is coated by sugar molecules on its surface. This resemblance is giving scientists a basis for developing a preventative vaccine. In HIV, the sugar molecules act as a cloaking device, allowing the virus to enter our system without being noticed until weeks later when it has already set up house and begun to multiply rapidly. Once our body recognizes the intruder, the virus is already several steps ahead of our body’s efforts to eliminate it. Scientists hypothesis that the sugar molecules found on the Rhizobium could be used to trigger our immune response into recognizing the sugar molecules in HIV, which would prompt a faster awareness to the virus’ invasion.
Before it’s possible to put this hypothesis into practice, scientists need to find a suitable protein to bind the sugar molecules. The protein is necessary to adequately trigger the development of antibodies to the sugar. These same antibodies would then recognize and work to eliminate the sugar molecules attached to the HIV virus. This is not totally new scientific territory, as a similar method of developing vaccines for meningitis and childhood pneumonia.

LIPID PANEL

‘Lipids’ is a medical term used to describe fat found in the blood stream. There are two types of lipids; Cholesterol and Triglycerides:
Cholesterol- is a waxy substance that provides your body with energy and is used to make hormones and bile acids necessary for the digestion of food. Cholesterol is made naturally by the body and some comes from the foods we eat. While your body needs cholesterol to function properly, too much cholesterol can cause plaque to build up in the arteries, increasing the likelihood of heart disease, heart attack and stroke.
Cholesterol is made of lipoproteins. Two main types of lipoproteins carry cholesterol”
1. LDL-this kind of cholesterol is known as the ‘bad cholesterol’ because it carries cholesterol to tissues, including the arteries. The LDL is the amount of cholesterol fat circulating in your blood.
2. HDL- this cholesterol is known as the ‘good cholesterol’ because it works to remove the ‘bad’ cholesterol from your body. The higher your HDL level, the more ‘bad’ cholesterol your body can remove.

Triglycerides –Triglycerides are another type of fat found in the blood stream and fat tissues. When triglyceride levels rise too high, it contributes to narrowing and hardening of the arteries. When this happens you become more susceptible to heart attacks and stroke. People with Diabetes, alcoholism, kidney failure, or obesity often have high triglyceride levels. Normal triglyceride levels are typically under 150, with high levels being over 200.
The only way to know for certain what your lipid levels are is to have a lipid panel performed by your local laboratory. Don’t wait until it becomes a lasting problem.

FOBT or Fecal Occult Blood

Colorectal Cancer is the third highest cause of cancer mortality in the United States. The ACS (American Cancer Society) predicts nearly 143,000 newly diagnosed cases this year. While scientists are still unclear about the exact cause of most colorectal cancers, there are risk factors that are known to contribute to the disease. These factors include lack of exercise, poor diet, and rectal or colon polyps. Individuals who are over fifty years of age are considered a higher risk category than a younger person. It has been recommended that men and women should have periodic colonoscopies, FOBT tests, and/or other screening to check for colorectal cancer; however, people with a family history or colorectal cancer should begin screening earlier. According to the Centers for Disease Control , as many as 60% of all cases of colorectal cancer could be avoided with regular screening and prevention methods.
Potential warning signs of colorectal cancer can include:
*Rectal bleeding
* Dark stools or stools containing blood
*Differentiation between bowl movements (for example: switching between diarrhea and constipation)
*Lower stomach cramping and pain
* Weakness, fatigue, weight loss
According to the most current research on the subject, eating a healthy diet of many fruits and vegetables in addition to moderate exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding alcohol, can all help play a role in colorectal cancer prevention.
