Vitamin D and Bone loss
Vitamin D plays a key role in maintaining strong bones and is the key regulator of serum calcium levels. Calcium is primarily obtained through diet and is absorbed through the intestine and into the blood stream. Vitamin D is important for numerous physiological processes in addition to building bone; For example, Vitamin D regulates calcium levels in the blood stream and determines how much should be stored within the skeleton.
Dr. Geert Carmeliet and colleagues at the University of Leuven in Belgium investigated how Vitamin D laffects the skeleton when serum calcium levels are depleted. Using lab mice that lack the intestinal Vitamin D receptor, the researchers found that the mice still maintained normal calcium levels even when given a low-calcium diet. Further study suggested that Vitamin D stimulated bone cells to produce factors that removed calcium from bone in a process known as bone resorption in order to satisfy normal serum calcium levels. Therefore, although Vitamin D is important for maintaining serum calcium levels, it can also promote bone density loss.
Subsequent studies showed how these findings may explain clinical results where vitamin D supplements failed to prevent fractures in elderly patients, and in some cases, were correlated with increased fracture rates.

EKG /ECG
An EKG, also called an ECG, is a diagnostic tool used to measure electrical activity in a person’s heart. The EKG measures the electrical waves of the heart and converts them to line tracings on special EKG paper. Reasons for a Physician to order an EKG vary widely depending on the patient:
• To measure electrical activity of the heart
• To find the cause on unexplained chest pain -this is most often due to angina, pericarditis, or heart attack.
• To find the cause of symptoms of heart disease like- chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting or irregular heartbeats.
• To see if the heart’s chambers are to thick (hypertrophied)
• To see how well medicines are working and whether or not they have side effects that affect the heart
• To see how well mechanical devices in the heart are working like a pacemaker
• To check the condition of the heart when other diseases or conditions are present
The procedure for an EKG is as follows:
The patient will be asked to remove all metal form the waist up and have the option of donning a paper vest with the opening to the front. When ready, the patient will lay facing up on a table or bed. The medical assistant will then attach sticky electrodes to the chest and extremities. Next, the healthcare professional will attach clips that are connected to wires, which are connected to the EKG machine. Once everything has been placed the healthcare professional will instruct the patient to be very still and not speak during the EKG. The EKG is painless and only takes a moment to complete. The line tracings will be interpreted by the Doctor and a diagnosis will be made based on the findings.

STDs - sexually transmitted diseases
One of the biggest health issues of the world is improper use of the male condom. The most common problems in the United States are putting them on inside out, or not using them at all. Condom use is beneficial for avoidance of pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/ AIDS, and avoidance of sexually transmitted infections.
Many people feel embarrassed talking about sexual health; Condoms, STDS, lubricants-none of these topics are particularly pleasant to talk to a complete stranger about, and can be even more uncomfortable when talking to someone familiar. But sexual health affects everyone, young or old, black or white, rich or poor. Not understanding how to properly use a male condom can lead to very adverse and often deadly consequences, and more efforts must be made to raise awareness.
The condom is an extraordinary tool. From its humble beginnings when ancient people would use the intestines of animals or the skin of sheep to avoid venereal diseases; to the ribbed, studded, flavored varieties you find in today’s drug stores. Condoms come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and even flavors. As effective as condoms are at preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, their effectiveness is greatly diminished with improper use. Every box of condoms comes with instructions that should be followed exactly as written. In the heat of the moment it can be difficult to slow down and secure a condom, but many people find it helps to have their partner help. Most importantly, condom use is never a bad decision.

HIV Testing Boca Raton
According to an article published in the March 13th edition of AIDS, African women infected with a common sexually transmitted bacterial infection called Mycoplasma genitalium are twice as likely to acquire an HIV infection. Mycoplasma genitalium is a parasitic bacterial infection and was first identified in 1980; this condition produces inflammation of the reproductive tract and genitals. This bacterium is known to cause or exacerbate conditions like Uriethritis, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, and Cervicitis; but it is important to note that many people go for many years without any signs or symptoms. Thankfully, this bacterial parasite is easily treated with a course of antibiotics.
In the study, researchers found that in initial blood samples when all women were HIV free, approximately 15% of the women who later developed HIV were infected with Mycoplasma genitalium, compared to the 6.5% who never developed the disease. Another interesting find is that M. Genitalium was shown to be more prevalent than even Gonorrhea and Chlamydia. According to researchers, M. Genitalium was responsible for approximately 9% of all HIV infections throughout the study but other factors showed even more risk. For example, someone with Herpes simplex virus type 2 (genital herpes) has an even higher likelihood of contracting HIV than even someone exposed to M. Genitalium.

Titer Tests
Titer tests are antibody blood tests that prove immunity or vaccination status of an individual. When a person has come into contact with an antigen, the body will create antibodies to defend itself from the unfamiliar contaminant. This concentration of antibodies is what titer blood tests measure. Titer tests are typically done when childhood immunization records are not available such as when a person immigrates into the US from a foreign country; but they are also performed for adults who are unaware of their immunization status. Many healthcare schools require titer tests for their students, as not being vaccinated to certain diseases can be deadly to immuno-compromised patients. Typically, titers are done to determine immunization status for the following:
Measles
Mumps (This group of three tests is called an “MMR”- for measles, mumps and rubella)
Rubella
Varicella- This checks for immunity to Varicella zoster, which is also known as human herpes virus 3 or HHV3
Hepatitis B – Hepatitis B is a very serious viral infection of the liver. This is very easy to spread via blood; in fact, Hepatitis B is 50 to 100 times more infectious than HIV. Healthcare workers are wise to get vaccinated for Hepatitis B and it is required by some schools.

CBC BLOOD TEST
A CBC, or complete blood count, is a commonly ordered blood test that tells Doctors whether the patient is anemic, fighting off an infection, has leukemia, and many other diseases. Many patients get a CBC test to determine a baseline status for their overall health. A CBC is actually a panel of tests, each one examining different parts and aspects o the blood. The CBC usually includes the following:
• WBC (white blood cells)
• WBC differential- What types of WBCs are present
• RBC (red blood cells)
• Hemoglobin – measures the oxygen carrying protein in the blood
• Hematocrit – The percentage of RBCs in a given volume of whole blood
• Platelet count – Fluctuations can indicate different diseases and conditions and give insight to clotting time or bleeding times
• MCV (mean corpuscular volume) – the average size of your RBCs
• MCH (mean corpuscular hemoglobin) – average amount of hemoglobin within a RBC
• MCHC (mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration)- the average concentration of hemoglobin in a RBC
• RDW (Red cell distribution width) – a calculation of the size differences in RBCs
Many patients ask how they can ‘make’ their cell counts higher or lower to be within normal ranges. Unlike other tests like cholesterol where the patient can directly affect the results with lifestyle change, the CBC ranges cannot be affected this way unless the level is due to a deficiency (for example, someone with anemia can get vitamin B-12 shots and raise the number of RBCs in their blood).

Childhood Abuse link to HIV
In a study conducted by Duke University over a two year period involving 600 HIV positive patients, it was found that one in four patients were sexually abused as children. Traumatic childhood experiences were also linked to poorer overall health. More than half of the patients involved in the study had experienced sexual or physical abuse in their lifetimes. Half of the patients had experienced three or more traumatic experiences, including sexual and physical abuse or witnessing domestic violence as a child, a parent’s suicide attempt or suicidal thoughts, or losing a child. Duke University professor Brian Pence said “For whatever outcome we looked at, psychological trauma ended up being a predictor of worse medical outcomes and poorer health-related behaviors.”
More traumatic life experiences were linked with unprotected sex, skipping antiretroviral treatments, recent emergency room visits and hospitalizations. HIV positive patients with more traumatic experiences were more likely to see their health decline or die during the study period.
Most surprising to researchers was that the effects of past trauma on current behaviors and health was not explained by the usually factors.
"We would expect people with a history of exposure to trauma to have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression or other mental health concerns, like drug abuse or poor coping skills, and that these things in turn would more fully explain why they had lower adherence to their medications and worse health," Pence said. "But, we found that trauma history was still associated with bad health outcomes independent of mental health status, drug use or coping styles. So we have more to learn about exactly how past traumatic experiences exert influence on behaviors and health outcomes years down the road."
Healthcare professionals need more training in identifying HIV patients who have undergone trauma so as to better understand and implement tools to help these patients be more diligent about using protection, taking medications, and taking more control of their health.

Blood Pregnancy Test
Although urine pregnancy tests are easy to use and convenient to buy, many women will not feel safe accepting the results of these tests without first having a blood pregnancy test. Blood pregnancy tests can measure the exact amount of hCG(Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) in a woman’s blood. This number will indicate not only if the woman is in fact pregnant, but how far a long she is in her pregnancy as well. This type of blood pregnancy test is called a “Quantitative pregnancy test.”
There is another blood pregnancy test called a “Qualitative pregnancy test.” This type of test only tells the woman she is or is not pregnant, similar to the results of a urine test but with a much higher accuracy.
Blood pregnancy tests have certain advantages to the urine test:
1. Blood pregnancy tests can determine pregnancy sooner than a standard urine test. As early as 7-12 days from possible conception.
2. Because a quantitative blood pregnancy test gives the exact level of hCG, the Doctor can use this information to track the progression of the pregnancy as well as monitor for any signs of a problem.
3. There is very little room for error since a blood pregnancy test is done by a trained healthcare professional. At home urine tests can sometimes be confusing and if not performed correctly can give false results.
4. For about the same cost of a urine test, you can have a more accurate and more in depth blood pregnancy test. This information is valuable to your healthcare providers.
5. Some types of urine tests will give different answers when taken multiple times. A blood test is the only way to know for sure.
A blood pregnancy test is often the first step for women who think they are pregnant. The results of this test can change a woman’s life forever, so shouldn’t she be a well informed and confident patient? Scheduling a blood pregnancy test is as easy as calling your local Any Lab Test Now location and making an appointment. You’ll be glad you did.
